We pride ourselves in providing high quality, evidence based interventions that make a real difference to the people we work with. This is reflected both in the testimonials given by clients (see below for a small selection) as well as significantly reduced scores on objective rating scales (see graph below summarising data).
"I had made some progress with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy but there comes a point where thinking yourself out of a problem doesn't work...DBT was different - turning the problem around and addressing my behaviour rather than my thoughts"
"The (Brighter Horizons Brighton) therapist was terrific - empathetic, clear, knowledgeable and always supportive"
"DBT is a powerful and life changing therapy. I'd most certainly recommend it to others suffering from the same problems as me (anxiety)"
"DBT skills helped me realise how I'd been thinking wrong. My aggression has lost me countless jobs and I've hurt people I care about. I'd been trying not to feel angry my whole life. Since doing DBT I realised it's not the anger that's the problem it's what I do with it that is. I've learnt it's ok to let myself feel it but then apply my skills to what happens next. It's not perfect but I can usually think through the consequences of acting in anger."
"I am definitely more trusting than when I first came and now have tools to manage when distrust creeps in. Others have noticed how different I am and I have too."
"I feel so much better, I’ve always wanted skills and now I have skills to help me. This really does work. Using skills 100% really works."
"I thought it wouldn’t help if I didn’t talk about the past as well as the details of my week but this approach worked.
I am much less anxious, I feel free."
"I learnt loads from just listening to others talk about their diary cards and how they'd used the skills in real situations."
"I used to self harm several times a week, now I can manage the urges without actually doing it."
"Now I can say how I feel and what I'd like."
"I've had therapy before and just felt useless at it. The therapist was kind but worried about me too much, which stopped me being truthful about self- harm. DBT being a whole team therapy has meant I can be myself and not have to worry as much about my therapist."
"Interpersonal skills helped me realise that staying loyal to one person who was hurting me sucked, and once I changed that I changed myself."
"Anger and violence was all I remember from growing up. I used it to get what I wanted and it sort of worked in the moment. No one stuck around. I can manage upset and disappointment better now. The other day something happened which really affected me. I still felt like smashing her in the face but instead I asked calmly and politely and got it. Its still a surprise when that happens."
Our Outcomes
Brighter Horizons Brighton uses a variety of ways of measuring change in the clients that access our service. Included is the CORE which is a questionnaire completed at the beginning and end of treatment which looks at symptoms such as anxiety and depression ('problems'), day to day functioning including social isolation ('functioning), wellbeing (which includes a measure of resillience) and risk (including thoughts about self harm). We have consistently excellent results, demonstrating significant changes in scores pre- and post-therapy. The table below represents average scores pre and post therapy across the different domains of the CORE. On average, clients drop from the moderate to mild range of symptoms and difficulties.
